City sees minimum temp of 16.4 deg C on Thursday

By Friday evening however, the maximum temperature started increasing, according to weather officials.

Mumbai: Mumbai’s weather turned chillier as the minimum temperature Thursday night dropped by another 4.4 degree Celsius. The Santacruz observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 16.4 degree Celsius Thursday night as against 20.8 degree Celsius recorded Wednesday night. By Friday evening however, the maximum temperature started increasing, according to weather officials.

Weathermen attributed the chilly weather to the cooler northern winds sweeping over the Mumbai region. Borivali recorded the lowest mercury level at 15.19 degree Celsius, followed by Powai and Goregaon. Around 23 locations in Mumbai recorded minimum temperatures below 20 degree Celsius Friday, as per IMD data.

“Due to the northerly cooler winds, the night temperature in Mumbai plummeted by a further 4 degree Celsius. However since Friday, temperatures rose by about 2.3 degree Celsius,” said an IMD official.

K.S. Hosalikar, deputy director general, IMD Mumbai said, “Comparing winds, it is observed that the land breeze (easterly) continued late afternoon, delaying the sea breeze which works like a natural thermostat for Mumbai, controlling temperature.”

Meanwhile, in Vidarbha and parts of interior northern Maharashtra, temperatures continued to remain around 10 degree Celsius according to the IMD. On Friday, the Gondia district recorded the lowest temperature across the state at 8.2 degree Celsius followed by Brahmapuri at 9.4 degree C, Amravati at 10 degree C and Jalgaon, too, at 10 degree C.
