Mumbai: The monsoons are back in Mumbai with full force. The Meteorolo-gical Department (MD) on Saturday issued an alert about ‘heavy rainfall’ in the city over the next 48 hours.

Fishermen have been advised against venturing out into the Arabian Sea during the next 24 hours. After a brief dry spell, the city was lashed by rains on Friday night, recording an average of 3.59 centimetres in K.S. Hosalikar, Deputy Director General (Western Region), IMD, said, “Heavy to heavy rainfall at few places is expected, with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places likely to occur in the districts of greater Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad during the next 48 hours.”

The southwest monsoon has already advanced into the central Arabian Sea, the remaining parts of coastal Karnataka, entire Goa, and parts of Konkan and interior Karnataka. “Konkan will receive heavy rainfall over 48 hours commencing from June 10.

Since Friday, the monsoon has covered a very small portion of the Konkan as its progress has been hampered by the cyclonic circulation and its westward movement over the Arabian Sea some days ago. Also, the winds over the western coast have been more northerly in nature, instead of westerly.
