Though the situation has improved since 2006 train bombings, there is a lot that needs to be done on the ground.

Q: How far have things improved on the ground since the 2006 bombings?
A: Railway security came more prominently on the establishment’s radar after the 26/11, 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. The railways got CCTVs, commandos and other gadgets following these attacks. Though the situation has improved since 2006 train bombings, there is a lot that needs to be done on the ground.

Q: The unauthorized entry/exit points at stations have been a concern for years. What is being done in that regard?
A: We have been trying to secure these points as best as we can but it is not possible on all the stations. The railways have also been informed about it on several occasions. These entry/exits should be plugged or made authorized and secured accordingly.

Q: What are the plans for the future, for better equipment of the GRP to tackle a terror attack?
A: We are in the process of drafting a new ‘weapons policy’ for upgrading the weaponry of our personnel. It is being worked upon and each and every personnel’s role and requirement of the arms that he/she would need is being studied before taking a final decision.
