Mumbai: The Thane crime branch arrested a 19-year-old youth, who had kidnapped a juvenile girl from Gujarat and  fled with her on July 10 under the pretext of marriage. The girl was rescued from Goa after the Thane crime branch traced them there based on information received from informers.

The Gujarat police sought the Thane police's help after they found that the accused had left for Thane from Gujarat.

The accused was identified as Hufeza Farooq Gadiwala, who was arrested by a team of unit I of the Thane crime branch from Goa.

The duo was tracked to Panjim by the police and brought to Thane.

The Maliwad police had informed their counterparts in Thane that Gadiwala had fled with the girl after promising her marriage, which amounted to kidnapping as she was underage. They were last tracked to Thane, Gujarat police confirmed.

“There was lot of tension in the village at Marathwad Vyara in Tapi after another minor girl was sexually assaulted and this girl was reported to have been kidnapped. Hence, she needed to be tracked soon. We informed our network of informers, who confirmed that the accused and the girl had left for Goa,” said a Thane crime branch officer.

After the girl was traced at Goa, a team of Thane and Gujarat police raided the place and nabbed the accused person and rescued the girl.

The police are yet to ascertain if the girl was forced into a relationship or if they had married after leaving the village. The police took them to Gujarat from Goa forfurther investigation in the case.

Gadiwala has been booked under sections 363 (kidnapping) and 366 (kidnaping or abduction to induce woman to compel her into marrying) of the Indian Penal Code and Gujarat police is probing the matterfurther.
