Lecturer burning case: Chargesheet in 2 weeks
Mumbai: Days after the death of the 25-year-old lecturer in Wardha, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has now said that it would file a chargesheet in the case within a fortnight. The officials said that the accused is currently in police custody till February 20 and the chargesheet is expected to be filed before that.
The 25-year-old lecturer, Ankita Pisudde, was burned to death by stalker Vikesh Nagrale (27) at Hinganghat in Wardha district on February 3. After fighting for her life, Pisudde succumbed to her injuries at Orange City Hospital and Research Centre in Nagpur on Monday, officials said.
She had sustained deep 35 to 40 per cent burn injuries on the scalp, face, right upper limb, left hand, upper back, neck and eyes along with severe inhalation injuries.
The SIT, headed by Wardha deputy superintendent of police (DySP) Trupti Jadhav, is probing the brutal attack. The team has recorded the statements of around six witnesses till date and samples of evidence have been sent for forensic analysis.
“The probe is almost complete. The accused carried out the attack solely and it came two years after she parted ways with Nagrale,” said a police officer.
Nagrale attacked the victim when she was on her way to college. His weird behaviour set the alarm bells ringing for the 25-year-old lecturer and she distanced herself from him after she learnt that he was married and still trying to get close to her.
Lawyer Ujjwal Nikam as special public prosecutor will represent the prosecution. The police has begun collating the paperwork for the chargesheet to be filed and is also questioning him in police custody.
Making the announcement in Mumbai, chief minister Uddhav Thacke-ray said that the case, which has triggered widespread public anger and outrage, would be tried in a fast-track court to ensure speedy justice to the victim and her family.
Pisudde was cremated in the presence of thousands in Daroda village on Monday evening. While heavy security was deployed in Hinganghat, some angry locals threw stones to block the road when the ambulance carrying the body was on its way to Daroda.
The local police, however, managed to control the situation and the Rapid Action Force was also deployed in the area, an official said.
Residents of Daroda village also blocked the highway demanding capital punishment for the arrested accused.
