Vinayak Mete ditches BJP, declares support to NCP

The Shiv Sangram chief said that he would support the NCP's Bajrang Sonawane against BJP MP Pritam Munde in the Beed LS constituency.

Mumbai: The chinks in the BJP-led state government’s armour have been exposed even as Maratha leader Vinayak Mete from the Shiv Sangram party Thursday announced that he will support the NCP candidate from Beed constituency.

Mr Mete said that he will not support the BJP to protest the high-handed attitude of cabinet minister Pankaja Munde.

The Shiv Sangram chief said that he would support the NCP’s Bajrang Sonawane against BJP MP Pritam Munde in the Beed Lok Sabha constituency. Mr Mete, who hails from the Beed, has often criticised Pritam and her elder sister Pankaja, who is also Beed’s guardian minister.

“The BJP MP always meted out humiliating treatment to us in the last four to five years. My workers asked me if we should tolerate it. I said they should not, and take an appropriate decision,” said Mr Mete.

However, one of Mr Mete’s aides said he would continue to support the BJP in all other constituencies to strengthen the hands of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Mr Mete was elected to the Legislative Council in 2016 with BJP’s support. The BJP-led government also appointed him as chairman of a committee formed to oversee construction of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj memorial in the Arabian Sea.
