Lack of awareness killed BMC scheme to end illegal dumping

According to BMC data, about 9,000-10,000 metric tonnes (MT) of waste is produced in the city.

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) scheme to award citizens giving information about illegal dumping of debris has failed to evoke any response from the public.

Taking a serious note of rampant dumping of debris across the city, the municipal corporation had decided in July 2015, to offer a cash award of Rs 10,000 to people imparting information on the haphazard dumping of construction material. But hardly anyone came forward to benefit from the scheme, thus defeating its purpose of preventing dumping.

According to BMC data, about 9,000-10,000 metric tonnes (MT) of waste is produced in the city, of which 7,500 MT is regular waste and 2,500 MT is debris. However, instead of proper disposal of debris at collection spots, it is being dumped along the city roads, causing inconvenience to public.

The BMC circular had promised the cash award to “citizens who send photographs of trucks (exposing the number plate) which dump debris on public road via e-mail on the BMC’s official email ID.” Its failure is being blamed on the lack of public awareness.
