LLB students fret about internals, 60:40 exam pattern
MUMBAI: The LLB students of the University of Mumbai (MU) in the beginning of their academic course prepared for their examination as per the 100 marks question paper pattern, however, since the varsity has changed it to 60:40, the students now have the additional burden of internal assessment consisting of assignments and projects carrying the 40 marks. Meanwhile, the exams of these students are just a month away.
Since the varsity announced about the 60:40 exam pattern, for the internal assessment, students were asked to prepare presentations, projects and assignments which will give them marks out of 40. However, students feel like they have been cheated as when they joined the course, there was no mention of internal assessment in the brochure.
“Imagine you are preparing for 100 marks and suddenly they make it 60 while the syllabus or length of portion to be studied remains the same. Now, on the top, we also have to prepare for internal marks,” said a student.
Meanwhile, professors of the Law faculty feel it is a good move because it will make the students a better lawyer. “Before the 60:40 pattern being introduced there were many instances when we entered empty classrooms because they did not care about the attendance,” Dr. Krishna Shetty, director and professor at Bunts Sangha’s Uma Krishna Shetty Institute said while talking to this newspaper. The 40 marks contain marks for attendance as well.
He added, “By doing more presentations, the students will get a better insight about the profession they are getting into. By practising more, realistically and not theoretically, the quality of students will improve.”
