Mumbai: In a bid to improve the sewage systems, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed to implement Mumbai Sewerage Improvement Programme (MSIP). Under the programme, it has planned to rehabilitate, augment, upsize existing sewer lines and provide new sewer lines in unsewered areas.

“We have decided to provide 100 Per cent sewer network through MSIP which has three components. Under component I, it is proposed to lay sewer lines on existing DP/municipal roads. In component II, sewer lines will be laid on undeveloped DP/municipal roads after such roads are constructed, and under Component III, sewer facility will be extended to slum areas. All the three Components will be implemented simultaneously,” said municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta.

According to the civic officials, the component will provide piped sewer facility to the entire city. To achieve the target, the sewer lines will be laid on 93.68 km of DP and municipal roads in a span of five years. There are certain sewer lines, which are old and require rehabilitation or upsizing. On completion of component I, the coverage of area sewered will increase from 74.67 Per cent to 86.27 Per cent, said a civic official.

In component II, the sewer lines on undeveloped roads will be undertaken step-by-step by the BMC or by concerned Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) developer or private layout developer as and when development is approved. The component III will be implemented for slums in which the sewer network will be developed under the Swatch Bharat Mission.

Mumbai has a network of 1915 km sewer lines within city limits currently. The budget provision proposed for MSIP works for the year 2017-18 is Rs 136.41 crore.
