Civic hospital paramedical staff to get behavioral training

The process is expected to take at least six months to implement, said the chairperson of the health committee.

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) health committee will soon start a behavioural training course for paramedical staff, including ward boys and ayahs (female attendants), where they will be taught how to conduct themselves in a proper manner.

The staff will also learn how to communicate effectively with patients and their relatives, and operate hospital machinery. The process is expected to take at least six months to implement, said the chairperson of the health committee.

Many a time, patients’ relatives create hassles, forcing paramedical staff to intervene which then leads to a brawl between medicos and patients’ kin.

It has been observed that paramedical staff tends to use harsh language which shows civic hospital authorities in poor light.

BMC health committee chairperson Rohini Kamble said, “To reduce this communication gap between patients and their relatives, the BMC has decided to introduce behavioural training for ward boys and female attendants.”

Asked about the alleged misbehaviour of paramedical staff, Ms Kamble said, “Employees who report drunk on duty will be suspended. A number of people have raised questions about the attitude and language used by ward boys and female attendants which is the real reason for this course.”
