Mumbai: The 25-year-old brother of a balloon seller was killed in a cylinder blast that allegedly occurred while he was trying to prepare gas early on Saturday morning in Bhandup.

The police has roped in a chemical analyst to find out the gas that sparked the incident as its pressure caused the cylinder to fly 500 metres away from the blast spot.

The police suspects that the deceased, Nasir Nathu, who was filling in for his brother, was inexperienced and the blast occurred due to a mistake on his part.

The blast occurred at around 6.30 am, killing Nathu and injuring another brother.

According to police sources, balloons are usually filled with gasses such as helium or hydrogen that are less dense than air or lighter than it.

According to the police Nathu was trying to create the gas with the help of a carpet, and he applied extra pressure during his efforts, as he didn’t know the exact amount required to make the gas.

A resident of the Bhatti Pada bus stop area in Bhandup, Ramesh Jadhav, said, “We were about to wake up when we heard a big blast, which shattered our windows. When our society members went down, we saw a man in flames. We immediately called the fire brigade and tried to douse the fire. After fire brigade officials arrived, they control the situation. There are more than 10 buildings in our area whose windows were found broken after the incident.”

DCP zone 7, Sachin Patil said, “These people (Nathu’s family) are not residents of this area; they have come from Mumbra.”

According to officials, the deceased and his brother used to come to Bhandup and Thane to ply their trade on special occasions like Independence Day and Ganesh Chaturthi.

The Bhandup Police station registered a case against the owners of the business, Abdul Khan and Dhermender and Puran Harijen, for negligence.
