Heavy vehicle weighbridges to be checked

Mumbai: The state legal metrology organisation department (LMO) has issued a circular making it mandatory that a new weighbridge will be checked thoroughly certified before it is used.

The officials said that the circular would be applicable for all units that will be calibrated after November 15.

Weighbridges are used to monitor the weight of heavy vehicles passing through state check posts at entry-exit points and highways. There are 27 check- posts throughout the state. The LMO had received a complaint that the weighbridges were not properly calibrated. There are 8,300 weighbridges are in operation throughout the state.

Amitabh Gupta, IPS, commissioner, legal metrology (weights and measures) department, “The aim is to protect the loss of farmers in the state while selling their crops to industrial or trade units, where the weighbridges provide improper readings.”
