Mumbai: The Worli police has arrested the driver of a Mercedes, which mowed down a 40-year-old woman on Tuesday afternoon, killing her on the spot.

The incident took place when the car rammed into Sarika Santosh Wagh, a Sewri resident, while she was crossing the road. The car was taking a right turn on Sasmira Marg near Sasmira College in Worli. Wagh was taken to Sion Hospital where she was declared brought dead.

Ichmani Tevar, the driver, who works for a private firm, went to the Worli police station by his own volition and surrendered himself.

The police took him into custody on charges related to culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

The police is verifying whether Tevar was driving at a high speed and was under the influence of alcohol.

It will also question the firm’s official who was being driven in the car by Tevar when the accident occurred.

According to a Worli police officer, the accused driver, Ichmani Tevar, is working with well-known private company as a driver for the last two years.

He was taking a right turn and the victim was crossing the road exactly when she was run down by the car. Senior Police Inspector of the Worli Police Station, Gajanan Desurkar said, “The accused driver immediately drove to the Worli police station and surrendered himself. We have registered the case under IPC section 304 and under the Motor Vehicle Act.”

He added, “We immediately rushed the woman to Sion Hospital where she was declared dead. We have contacted her family through her mobile phone and have yet to take their version. She had come to Worli to drop her child to school. We are also checking the driver’s previous records, ” he said.

On being asked about how the accident occurred, DCP (zone 3) Virendra Mishra said, “We are verifying how exactly the accident happened, but it happened when the victim was crossing the road. The driver voluntarily handed himself over to the police.”
