Mumbai: The Mumbai crime branch has busted a fake motor vehicle licence racket, arresting two persons. Officials have seized 35 fake licences and investigators said that many more licences are likely to have been forged.

The investigation revealed that the duo, identified as Baba Gujar, 52, and Kamlesh Giri alias Munna, 40, had created fake licences at Gujar’s residence in Nerul and sold them for Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000 to motorists, mostly two-wheeler riders.

A team headed by inspector Pravin Tejale, officer Mahendra Ghag and others apprehended the accused persons a fter one of them came to deliver a fake licence at the residence of a customer in Manadala village in Mankhurd.

Upon frisking him, 20 such forged licences were found. A crime branch officer said, “The riders would use the fake licences for bypassing payment of steep fines and would mostly let the police constable keep the license when apprehended as the document had forged details of the rider.”

The police team found a computer, photo printer, digitisers and other equipment from Gujar’s residence. The accused had been selling fake licences and PUC cards for the last couple of years.
