Metro builders 'duping noise watchdogs'

The residents have also alleged that the metro contractors are violating the high court order banning work after 10pm.

Mumbai: Residents of Churchgate and Cuffe Parade have alleged that the metro contractors are trying to hoodwink the noise monitoring team by deliberately keeping the construction sounds lower than normal during the inspection.

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) sent experts from the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) to the construction sites on Thursday to monitor the decibel levels following pressure from local residents.

Ashwin Nagpal, a resident of Churchgate, alleged that the residents complained after noise levels shot up to 100 decibels. “I complained to the MPCB two months ago, however, nothing happened till last month. In March, the MPCB stated that they will monitor both Cuffe Parade and Churchgate. Officials from NEERI came on Thursday but the noise from metro work was surprisingly lower than what I have been experiencing every day,” Mr Nagpal said.

The residents have also alleged that the metro contractors are violating the high court order banning work after 10pm. They alleged that the work that began on Thursday continued right up to 2am on Friday.
