Mumbai: The Bombay high court has issued contempt notice to Ulhasnagar and Pune Municipal Commissioner, Commissioner of Police (CP) and Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of various zones in Thane for not taking cognisance of noise pollution complaints despite an earlier court order.

After coming down heavily on the state government and municipalities over the failure to implement Noise Pollution Rules, the high court gave them last chance to execute the order. If they fail to implement court’s order, contempt proceedings would be initiated against them.

The division bench of Justice A S Oka and Justice Anuja Prabhudessai was hearing a clutch of petitions filed by various NGO’s seeking effective implementation of Noise Pollution Rules. On Tuesday, the state submitted a chart listing out the action taken against noise rules violators. The chart stated that since August 2016 the police authorities had received 2,218 complaints of noise pollution and out of the total complaints, only 101 were found to be ‘genuine’.
