Police nabs man 26 years after robbing SoBo senior citizen

Officials said Pathan accepted his involvement in the robbery case.

Mumbai: The Mumbai crime branch’s unit-VI finally nabbed 52-year-old Jamshed Imamuddin Pathan on Saturday night in Govandi, 26 years after after allegedly committing robbery at a senior citizen’s residence in Colaba. After fleeing from Mumbai, the accused had gone into hiding at his native’s and had returned to Mumbai few years ago. He was running a garage in Mumbra.

In 1991, Pathan, who was then 22, along with two of his accomplices had forcefully entered a senior citizen’s residence in Colaba and had attacked him, robbed him of valuables. While only one of them could be arrested then, Pathan and a man named Abbas managed to escape. The investigation was later transferred to unit-III of crime branch.

Pathan had fled to his native after committing the crime and was holed up there for around 12 years. He then returned to Mumbai and had been staying Mumbra where he had started his garage. He had been frequenting Shivaji Nagar in Govandi.

“He would come on weekends to Govandi to meet his friends, would stay over on Saturdays and return on Sunday or Monday. This time we received a tip-off that an absconding accused was arriving, following which we laid a trap,” said a crime branch officer.

A team of unit-VI, including officers Sanjay Bhapkar and others apprehended Pathan. After due verification, it was established that he was the same person. Another accused, Abbas was arrested by crime branch unit-VI in 2013.
