1993 blasts accused sent to judicial custody
MUMBAI: A special TADA court on Thursday remanded Ahmed Lambu alias Khalid Kamal Shaikh in judicial custody till June 28. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Lambu in connection with 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts case. The accused was arrested by the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) last month and was handed over to the CBI.
When Lambu was produced before special judge S.M. Bhosale the CBI counsel Deepak Salvi told the court that the agency does not want his further custody following which the judge remanded Lambu to judicial custody.
The Gujarat ATS’s Ahmedabad unit had told CBI on May 31 that they had arrested an accused who was wanted in the 1993 blasts case. Following which the investigating team brought Lambu to Mumbai on June 2, on transit remand that was to end on June 4.
On last date of hearing Mr Salvi had told the court that Lambu expressed his desire to confess on June 3, following which he was given 24 hours to rethink on his decision, and on Monday (June 4) morning he confessed before a magistrate.
When judge Bhosale had asked Lambu about the confession he made, he replied,
“The statement was read over to me and I said (to them) that I did not play any role in the blast, so remove that part. Rest is okay.”
