Mumbai: A group of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists made a public works department (PWD) contractor and in-charge of the site who was drunk while repairing pothole-ridden roads on Friday night do sit-ups.

Vice president of MNS Akhil Chitre gave an ultimatum of 48 hours to the PWD in order to fill the potholes, failing to which he warned them to make them stand in the potholes.

Mr Chitre had written a letter to the divisional engineer of PWD on July 10 to fix the pothole problem of Maratha colony junction to Milan subway as the vehicular traffic have to face hardships everyday.

The MNS vice-president claimed that despite five corporators, one MLA and one MLC from Shiv Sena, not a single letter was written by any of them to  the PWD to repair the roads.

According to Mr Chitre, when he went to the site on Friday night, he didn’t find the junior engineer (JE) of PWD there. “When I inquired about JE, I was informed that he would return within an hour. Even after an hour-long wait he did not turn up. I again checked and found he was at home.”

The MNS leader also alleged that the pothole was being filled without Ready Mixed Concrete (RMC). Mr Chitre said that the PWD had informed him that by Monday 10 am, the road will be pothole free.

Manoj Saunik, principal secretary of PWD, said, “We are not saying there are no potholes. But the department is working day and night in rain and storm to fill as many potholes possible.”
