Bombay HC may summon BMC chief over road work
Mumbai: The Bombay high court on Monday rapped BMC for not completing the road-widening work of Rajkamal Road of Parel. The Court also warned BMC counsel that in the next hearing if BMC failed to give proper assistance to the court, it will call BMC commissioner Ajoy Mehta. The court was hearing petition filed by former Mumbai sheriff Kiran Shantaram, son of well-known Marathi producer and director V.Shantaram who brought before the court that since 2006, BMC had started road-widening work and it is still not completed.
Shantaram lawyer informed the court that while the road has been widened, the MCGM stopped work midway. It had not cleared debris except for the road. She also submitted the latest photographs of the road in the court to emphasise her claim.
Geeta Joglekar, BMC counsel sought time to file a reply and said that the senior counsel will appear before the court in the next hearing.
Justice B.R. Gavai And Justice Makrand Karnik rapped BMC and said “BMC spent hundreds of crore rupees for their legal department but we didn’t get proper assistance when we heard matters. We are giving you one week to file your affidavits and pleadings. If this is not done by then, then ask the civic body commissioner to appear before us.""The corporation needs to improve its system. The corporation spends over '120 crore on its legal department and this is the kind of legal assistance we get," Justice Gavai said.
