Two Wankhede Stadium vendors in dock for overpricing

Mumbai: The state Legal Metrology Department (LMD) has registered a case against two vendors at Wankhede Stadium for selling products at prices higher than their Maximum Retail Price (MRP). The vendors were found selling a Rs 20 mineral water bottle for Rs 50 during the recently concluded fourth Test match between India and England, which was played at Wankhede. The department has also asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to stop such practices in future by passing the necessary instructions to their vendors.

The LMD has also informed the BCCI and Mumbai Cricket Association has been informed that they should put a stop to such practices.

Talking to The Asian Age, Amitabh Gupta, controller of state Legal Metrology Department (LMD), said, “During the inspection it was observed, (that) stalls located at the ground floor of Wankhede stadium were selling one litre water bottle for Rs 50, whereas MRP is Rs 20.”

“Case has been registered against the seller for violations of Legal Metrology Act and rules made there under as this is a clear cut case of overcharging, which is not allowed.”

Asked about shopkeepers overcharging for the bottles on the pretext of cooling them, Mr. Gupta said, “Charging above MRP on any pretext including cooling charge or transportation is an offence under the Central Law of Metrology Act provisions.”
