Vendor molests woman, nabbed

The incident took place during IPL match.

Mumbai: The Marine Drive police has arrested a water-bottle vendor after booking him for allegedly touching a female spectator inappropriately for not buying water from him during an IPL match at Wankhede stadium on Saturday. Two police constables apprehended the accused after the woman, a teacher, raised an alarm following the incident.

The accused was identified as Gandraj Satnami, who is in his late twenties. He followed the woman and touched her inappropriately twice. Officials said that the incident took place after the match when the woman was leaving from the stadium at around 8.15pm.

After she refused to buy water from Satnami, he allegedly followed her touched her. This happened twice after which she raised alarm and asked him to back off. Two police constables heard the commotion and rushed to the spot. Satnami tried to mix into the crowd when he was chased and apprehended by the two constables. “Based on the complaint, we have arrested the accused for molesting the woman at the cricket stadium. We are questioning him further,” said Manoj Sharma, deputy commissioner of police, (Zone I).

The police said that they have stepped up vigil when spectators are leaving the stadium. The police have registered a case against Satnami under section 354 (molestation) and 509 (outraging modesty of woman) of the Indian Penal Code. He has been remanded to two days police custody for further questioning.
