Online electricity bill payment rises by Rs 333 crore

Mumbai: The online bill payment initiative started by the state-run power utility provider Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) in 2014 has witnessed drastic rise in its collection for the last financial year.

According to the statement released by MSEDCL on Monday, on an average, the Pune circle of the company received Rs 99.48 crore payment every month through online mode in the last fiscal as against Rs 71.71 crore in 2015-16. Also, there has been an increase of Rs 333.29 crore in online bill payment in FY 2016-17 as compared to the previous fiscal.

According to statistics released by the service provider, Pune saw the highest number of consumers paying bills online and collections averaged Rs 99.48 crore per month.

Around 66.5 lakh consumers paid their bills online to take the annual collection to Rs 1,193.85 crore.   

Apart from the increase in collections the number of people opting for the online mode also went up from 19.55 lakhs during the same period to 66,5 lakh it said.

The statement also mentioned that a sizeable number of payments of MSEDCL power bills were made through a mobile app it had launched in June last year.

Areas in Mumbai were not very far behind Pune. Bhandup saw an online collection of Rs 1,031.81 crore. Kalyan, Nashik, Nagpur, Baramati, witnessed online bill payment of Rs 798.86 crore, Rs 314 crore, Rs 239 crore, Rs 228 crore,  respectively.
