7 lakh voters registered names online

An ECI official said that the video shooting of these icons was underway for the general election.

Mumbai: Twelve lakh people have made online applications for enrolling in the voters’ list, out of which, seven lakh people have been included. Thus, the total number of voters has increased to 8.80 crore in Maharashtra.

The state branch of the Election Commission of India has also roped in senior scientist Anil Kakodkar, Marathi actress Mrunal Kulkarni, first Indian pistol shooter Rahi Sarnobat, Marathi film actor Prashant Damle, Indian women’s team opener Smriti Mandhana, and transgender activist and social worker Gauri Sawant to appeal and motivate voters to come out in large numbers to participate.

An ECI official said that the video shooting of these icons was underway for the general election. “We will release their videos in electronic media as well as social media shortly across the state. The aim of this campaign is to bring out people from their homes to the polling centres on the day of voting,” he said.

The official said that so far, 1,231,027 people have submitted online applications, out of which, 717,427 names have been included in the voters’ lists in the state.

The applications of 218,948 persons have been rejected for not fulfilling the qualifying conditions. The remaining 294,652 applications are yet to be finalised.

Offline registration is carried out at the office of the assistant electoral registration officer office. The number of such applications is 55.75 lakh.
