Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation(BMC) has appointed a Project Management Consultancy (PMC) for improving the water quality of the city’s rivers. The PMC has to submit the Detailed Project Report (DPR) within six months.

Officials from storm water drains department stated that the inclusion of sewage treatment plants will also be considered by the consultancy.

Earlier in February, the BMC had floated the tender for appointing the consultancy for improving the water quality of all four rivers, mainly on diversion of sewage lines and beautification of the surrounding area, as earlier reported by The Asian Age.

“The consultancy will submit DPR within six months. They have to come up with measures that are environment-friendly and feasible. We also have considered phytoremediation that is improving the water-quality by useful plants, but it should be workable,” said V.H. Khandkar, chief engineer (SWD).

Under the river rejuvenation plan. the BMC will provide Rs 25 lakh to the PMC by the civic body. Officials stated that until the DPR is finalised the civic body will be focusing on desilting of rivers which is presently being carried out on pre-monsoon level.
