BMC garbage dumper knocks down woman
Mumbai: A woman, who was riding pillion on a two-wheeler died after a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) garbage dumper knocked down their motorbike near Amar Mahal junction in early hours of Sunday. The Tilak Nagar police are probing if the accident took place due to heavy rains. The police are searching for the absconding driver of the dumper.
The deceased woman was identified as Shalaka Satam (48), who was sitting pillion to her husband Shyamrao (55). The police said that the duo was returning to their residence at Pant Nagar in Ghatkopar from Chembur, when they met with the accident.
“The couple had gone to buy a gift for Satam’s elder brother, who was to celebrate his 60th birthday. They had bought the gift from Chembur and were returning home. The dumper was at a high speed and overtook the two-wheeler closely, leading to the accident. We have seized the truck and are looking out for the accused person,” said an Tilak Nagar police officer.
The investigators said that the driver is a resident of Thane and that they were being looked for in the case. However, the police have not yet revealed the name of the accused.
“He fled from the scene leaving the dumper behind. We got the details of the driver from the contractor and have seized the dumper,” added the officer.
A case under sections 304 (A) (causing death due to negligence) and 279 (rash driving) of the Indian Penal Code along with relevant sections of the Motor Vehicle Act has been registered against the accused.
