Court rejects interim relief plea of Thane ACP

The deceased Pawar was allegedly under duress as ACP Nipunge was calling her continuously for reasons unknown.

Mumbai: The Thane court has rejected the interim bail relief applied by ACP Shyamkumar Nipunge of Thane police, who is one of the accused in the abetment of suicide of a woman police constable Subhadra Pawar, who hanged herself to death last week in her flat.

A detailed enquiry is going on to ascertain the reason behind the drastic step.

The deceased Pawar was allegedly under duress as ACP Nipunge was calling her continuously for reasons unknown. Her fiancée, constable Amol Fapale, was present at Pawar’s Kalwa residence when she hung herself following a quarrel between them after she had received several calls from Nipunge asking her to report to work.

According to the sources, the deceased, the ACP and Fapale are attached with the Thane City Police headquarters, officials said.

A preliminary probe in the case has revealed that Pawar was with Fapale when Nipunge kept phone calling her. She was distressed due to too many calls from him and told Fapale about it and the couple had a fight, following which he went out to make a phone call. Meanwhile, a stressed Pawar, hung herself to a ceiling fan with a dupatta and Fapale was the first person to see her.

The incident was reported to the police, who registered an accidental death report. The Kalwa police then recorded statement of Pawar’s brother and based on his statement Nipunge and Fapale have been booked.

Thane police spokesperson, Sukhada Narkar said, “Technical evidence is being gathered and call detail records of all the three persons have been sought. The purpose of calls made by Nipunge is yet to be established. The police have registered a case of abetment to suicide against them. However, they have not been detained yet.”
