Mumbai: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)’s Thane MLA, Jitendra Awhad has lodged a complaint with Thane’s cyber police alleging that someone had created a fake account in his name on Facebook and befriended many actresses and messaged them. Mr Awhad confirmed the complaint and said that he has been ‘shamed’ by the comments posted by the culprit on the social networking site. The culprit is yet to be arrested and booked.

Speaking to The Asian Age, Mr Awhad said, “I have registered a complaint against the accused person, and intimated the Thane cyber police about it. I have been receiving complaints from my acquaintances about the messages received by them, sent under my name. So I took an interest in the matter and reported it to the police.” He added, “I have full faith in the judicial system, and would like to comment only after the culprit is nabbed.”

Mr Awhad also said, “I do not know what kind of messages were sent out, but since it were sent from an account under my name, I would like to clear that those were not sent by me, but by a person who has been handling a fake account under my name.”

According to sources at Naupada police station, a Vikhroli-based youngster, Sainath Patil (24), had made a few lewd comments, shaming Awhad, following which a NCP party worker registered a complaint against the accused and asked for action to be taken against him.

The deputy commissioner of police, zone 1, D. S. Swami said, “We have registered a complaint and the investigation is underway. No arrests have been made as yet.”

Meanwhile, the NCP leader clarified the matter on his Twitter account, saying, “Somebody is actively operating a fake FB account in my name. I have given it in writing to cyber cell.”
