Mumbai: A 42-year-old was arrested on Sunday along with two juvenile students who were detained for allegedly ragging and assaulting two minor students in a vedic school at Parbhani.

The incident occurred at Ganesh Ved Pathshala (school) located on Basmat Road at Parbhani, between August 26 and September 12. It came to light when the parents of the two victims complained to the police about it.

According to the victims’ parents, the accused students ragged the boys, tied their private parts with a string, and beat them up. The Parbhani police said that the victims, aged nine to 10 years, were tied with a manja (string) by the two juvenile students.

Following the incident, the victims suffered injuries to their private parts. The boys complained to Ved Pathshala director, Sudhir Kulkarni, about the “inhuman treatment” meted out to them in the name of ragging however Mr Kulkarni allegedly disregarded their complaint. The same day, the boys confided in their parents who lodged a complaint with the Parbhani city police.

The police arrested Mr Kulkarni on Saturday night for ignoring the complaints of the victims, while the two accused who are 10 and 13 years old, were detained. Offences were registered against the accused under IPC sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and provisions of the Maharashtra Prohibition of Ragging Act and Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act.

According to the police, after producing the director and the two accused before a local court, the former was retained in judicial custody while the latter were sent to a remand home after being produced before the Juvenile Justice Board.
