Mumbai: Municipal and private vehicles, used to provide various civic services, will now be monitored by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) with the help of the vehicle tracking system. The civic body has made it compulsory to install the vehicle tracking monitoring system (VTMS) in these vehicles.

According to civic officials, the BMC, along with its own vehicles, requires private vehicles to provide municipal services to citizens. These vehicles include water tankers, garbage compactors, vehicles carrying construction debris or silt, sewage vehicles etc.

There are 7,811 vehicles of various departments including solid waste management (SWM), storm water drains, hydraulics and those carrying construction debris. Currently, only 871 vehicles are fitted with cameras while 716 are privately provided vehicles.
