Mumbai: Construction work for the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) is expected to begin next year and will continue even during the flamingo season (October-March). The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has received all the permissions from the government to carry on the work during the night-time at Sewri mudflats, which is a home to flamingos and other rare species of birds.  In November, Larsen & Toubro had bagged a contract worth Rs 8,650 crore to construct package 1 and 3 of the project.

The 22-km corridor, which will connect the city with mainland Maharashtra, had faced several roadblocks in the past from environmentalists who had objected to the construction work during the arrival of flamingos. However, the MMRDA has received the green signal from the Union ministry of environment and forest (MoEF) to carry on the works during the night hours even in the flamingo season.

The authority has started with the land acquisition for the project, since the work will commence by next year. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is providing 85 per cent of the entire cost of the project. The bridge will take around four years for completion.
