Mumbai: With the holy month of Ramzan having started on Thursday, the Brihamumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has tightened the safety measures to be adhered to by food stalls and restaurants in south Mumbai. The civic officials will meet stall owners and others to instruct them about maintaining food quality and following laid down rules to avoid any untoward incident.

Udaykumar Shiroorkar, assistant municipal commissioner (AMC) of the B-ward (Bhendi Bazar etc.) which is dominated by the Muslim population, said, “We are soon going to have a meeting with all those who serve food during Ramzan. A yellow tape will be laid out on such streets and the stalls won't be allowed to cross that.”

“Since cooking on roads is not allowed, sheds will be provided by a few councilors. Also, the medical health officer of the ward will pay visits to these sites.

The waste department will ensure that garbage is not piled up and is cleaned regularly. Staff will be deployed during the night hours,” he said.

Civic health executive officer Padmaja Keskar told The Asian Age, “Since many stalls don't cover their food, we have already sent them an advisory to cover their preparations. Our officers will inspect the sites and we will warn them if they don’t abide by guidelines. Further, if they commit an offence repeatedly, action will be taken.”
