Mumbai: As a part of the rejuvenation of lakes in the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to improve quality of water with the help of bioremediation process. In the pilot project, five lakes at Bandra, Bhandup, Sion, Dindoshi have been selected.

According to civic officials, oxygen levels at lakes like Bandra Talao, Morya Talao (Mulund), Shivaji Talao (Bhandup), Sion Talao and Shantaram Talao (Malad) will be improved by implementation of this project.

For this initiative, the BMC has decided to appoint an agency called Probac Technology, which will carry out the bioremediation process to treat the water at these lakes. Water fountains and aerators will also be installed under the project, said civic officials.

In the bio-remediation process, microorganisms like yeast, fungi or bacteria are introduced into the polluted water body, to consume and break down environmental pollutants in it and clean it.

Civic officials said that the water in the lakes gets polluted due to the immersion of idols as they are mostly made-up of plaster of Paris. This practice is proving to be harmful for fishes and other marine species.

A senior civic official said, “The bioremediation process will not harm fishes or other species, as the treatment would improve oxygen level and clean the water without leaving a foul smell. The civic body is also planning to implement this process in other lakes, depending on the success of the pilot project.”

In December 2017, a lot of fishes were found dead in Sion lake creating panic among the local residents. They alleged that this incident had occurred due to lack of oxygen by contamination of the water in the lake.
