KEM trainee physiotherapist jumps to death
Mumbai: A trainee doctor (21) from the physiotherapy department of civic-run KEM Hospital committed suicide by jumping from the terrace of his residence in the early hours of Monday.
The reason behind Dr Omkar Mahesh Thakur’s (21) extreme step is yet to be ascertained, said police officials.
Omkar’s body was taken to civic-run Sion Hospital for an autopsy where forensic surgeons cited the preliminary cause of death as “shock due to polytrauma”.
A police source said that in a statement, Omkar’s father, Mahesh Thakur (58) said, “He was preparing for his final examination which started from June 12. He was concerned about his next paper on subject Cardio, which was on June 18.”
He further added, “On Sunday, everything seemed normal and he even accompanied us in watching the India-Pakistan world cup match.”
After the cricket match got over, Omkar went to his room, informing his father that he would wake up early tomorrow to study. However, next morning, at around 5.45 am on Monday when Omkar’s father woke up, he couldn’t find his son in the room. The air-conditioner was kept on and his study books were lying on the bed.
The night watchman Avinash Dalvi had heard a huge thud in the early hours of Monday and discovered Omkar lying in a pool of blood. He immediately reported the incident to the Shivaji Park police.
The reason behind the extreme step was yet to be ascertained, the official said, adding that the deceased’s friends and colleagues at the hospital were being quizzed. An accidental death report was registered and a probe was underway, he said.
The police have recorded the statement of Omkar’s parents and have started an inquiry into the case.
