Western Railways to run special train to tackle protest
MUMBAI: In a bid to ensure uninterrupted supply of milk to Mumbaikars, the Western Railways (WR) has made a special arrangement for milk supply into Mumbai from Gujarat. A milk tank will be attached to the Ahmedabad-Mumbai Central passenger train. The train can attach maximum two containers for six days. Each container will have a capacity of 44,000 litres.
Minister of Railways, Piyush Goyal had directed WR to make the arrangement for milk supply into Mumbai from Gujarat.
An officer of WR said that the provision for additional containers have been made for six days. Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd (KDCMPU LTD) is supplying milk in the said tankers.
Considering the short supply of milk and to meet the needs of the people of Maharashtra, provision has been made to attach upto two containers per trip and in total 12 milk tankers for transporting milk from Gujarat to Mumbai.
An additional rail milk tanker is being attached from Anand to Mumbai. Each tanker has a capacity of 44,000 litres. This will enable to reduce the scarcity of milk faced in Mumbai due to the agitation. In addition to these two containers, WR is already loading two milk tankers from Anand to Mumbai Central on daily basis.
