Teacher gets rapist' dad arrested

The girl had confided in her mother, but the father threatened both.

Mumbai: A municipal schoolteacher has helped a 14-year-old student escape her allegedly sexually abusive father by bringing attention to her plight, following which the 38-year-old was arrested on Saturday.

According to sources in the DN Nagar police station, the accused — a DN Nagar resident and tailor by profession — had been allegedly raping the minor since January 2016. The girl had confided in her mother, after which the latter asked the accused to desist from molesting their child. However, the accused threatened both his wife and daughter.

Eventually, on March 4, the girl mustered up the courage to confide in her teacher, who informed the school administration. The school then approached an NGO ‘Dilaasa’, which suggested that the teacher lodge a First Information Report (FIR) against the man. However, as the teacher was hesitant, the NGO approached the DN Nagar police station.

The police has booked the accused under the sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Speaking to The Asian Age, Dhanaji Nalawade, senior police inspector of DN Nagar police station, said, “We have registered an FIR against the accused and recorded the victim’s and her mother’s statement. The girl has been sent for medical tests.”

The accused has been remanded in police custody till Thursday.
