Security guard stabbed to death by two in Powai
Mumbai: The Powai police on Tuesday arrested two men for killing a private security guard at Powai lake on Monday night. The incident took place when Shoaib Khan, 50, and three of his colleagues tried to stop the accused from fishing illegally.
The accused, Tabrez Khan, 26, and Salim Siddique, 20, have a criminal background and were out on bail. The police had registered a dacoity case against them after nine men, including the duo, were caught fishing illegally in Powai Lake a few months ago.
The incident took place at 10.30 pm on Monday when Tabrez and Salim, who stay in nearby slums, came to fish in the lake. Security personnel were patrolling the lakeside and spotted the duo. They raised an alarm and other guards also joined them.
It was then that the accused, who were in a boat, jumped into the guards’ boat and stabbed Shoaib multiple times. Three other guards jumped off the boat and swam to the shore to alert the police. The guards work for an agency contracted by the BMC for ensuring the lake’s safety.
Bhai Mahadeshwar, senior inspector of Powai police station, said: The accused caught hold of Shoaib Khan and stabbed him to death. They were known to the security personnel as they have been pulled up and stopped from fishing illegally in Powai Lake on several occasions.” The killers threw his body in the lake and it was retrieved on Tuesday afternoon.
The accused have been charged with murder under section 302 along with acts of common intention as per section 34 of the Indian Penal Code. The police will produce them in a local court on Wednesday and will seek their custody for further investigation.
