Now corporators to mark attendance via biometric

There is a need to install biometric machines and CCTVs to ensure that corporators attend and take part in the proceedings of house, he said.

Mumbai: Like in the case of civic employees, the biometric attendance system will now be mandatory for Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) corporators for attending civic general body meetings. A proposal in this regard was discussed at the civic party group leaders meeting held in BMC headquarters on Monday and the BMC administration seems to have accepted it. However, the mayor and deputy mayor have been exempted from the biometric system, said sources.

To keep a check on ‘errant’ corporators, who remain absent for house meetings, Bharatiya Janata Party group leader Manoj Kotak had demanded that biometric attendance should be made compulsory for corporators too.

According to current practice, corporators before attending house meetings are expected to sign a register, which is kept outside the corporation meeting hall.

“There are some corporators, who sign the register and disappear without entering the house. They visit the civic body only for the sake of registering their attendance. Some of the corporators do not even visit the civic headquarters,” Mr Kotak had said in his proposal.

There is a need to install biometric machines and CCTVs to ensure that corporators attend and take part in the proceedings of house, he said.

Congress party leader Ravi Raja termed the decision as a good move. “It would keep a check on the number of time that his party corporators are attending the meeting,” he said.

The BMC recently had made it biometric attendance system mandatory for its employees in all the ward offices and departments. From July this year, the register system was discontinued to pave way for the biometric system.
