Mumbai: In a bid to reduce deaths on railway tracks, the railway minister Piyush Goyal has suggested that people of the city participate in a way that office timings become flexible.

On the question of staggered office timings, Mr Goyal  said that this experiment had been carried out many years ago but somehow did not succeed.

“When I became the railway minister, I proposed this but unless people participate in it, it is very difficult to achieve,” he said.

Asked if he was planning to implement the same in state government offices, Mr Goyal said, “We had an initial discussion with the state government but are yet to arrive at a solution. We need more public participation and more support from the private sector in such decision.”

Asked whether up to 10 people would be allowed to die every day till such a decision was taken, he said not to think negatively else life will not move forward. He said that they were trying hard to reduce the deaths on tracks.

Mr Goyal further added that only 17 per cent passengers had increased, while the amenities had increased only 30 per cent. For so many years, investment had not been made in Mumbai suburban. This was the reason (why deaths were taking place.), he said.
