Gurumaa' held for duping couple
Mumbai: The N.M Joshi Marg police has arrested spiritual leader ‘Gurumaa’ for cheating a couple to the tune of over Rs 12 lakh by promising to wipe away their past life’s sins and improve their present situation.
The police has booked the self-proclaimed godwoman under the Black Magic Act and Human Sacrifice Act and is questioning her.
The officials said that the godwoman came in contact with the family and duped them of at least Rs 12.75 lakh from November 2016 till date.
The complainant stated that the godwoman told them that she could establish contact with Shirdi Sai Baba and he had bestowed her with powers.
The accused claimed that she could treat the complainant’s in-laws and told the complainant and her husband that they had committed various sins in their past life, which she could undo,” said an officer of the N.M Joshi Marg police station.
The complainant stated that the godwoman committed to weed out all the obstacles from their path for a peaceful life. She performed several rituals and also tutored the complainant over a period of time. However, after the complainant failed to experience positive changes in her life, she confronted the godwoman and her disciples. On not being able to get the money she had lost, she informed her family and they approached the police to lodge a complaint.
A case was filed against Gurumaa under sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code along with relevant sections of the Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act.
The police arrested Gurumaa from her residence in Mumbai and have her police custody for further investigation in the case. The officials added that they are also probing if she has cheated anybody else similarly.
