Flummoxed by GST, IRCTC stops mailing passes

At the same time, GST is being levied on First-Class passes issued at the counter or via the mobile application till a decision is made.

Mumbai: The Indian Railway Catering & Transport Corporation (IRCTC) has stopped sending monthly First Class passes for Mumbai local trains to the houses of applicants over Goods and Services Tax (GST) complications. The officials have said Second Class passes are still being mailed but only a 100 people out of 85 lakh daily commuters have been using the facility annually for the past three years.

This facility had always got a tepid response, but IRCTC has stopped the service because there is uncertainty over application of GST, an official said.

“We are waiting for the Railway Board to come to a decision about the First Class tickets as the Board in Delhi is still deliberating whether the facility should be charged GST or not,” the official said.

At the same time, GST is being levied on First-Class passes issued at the counter or via the mobile application till a decision is made.

IRCTC spokesperson Pinakin Morawala said, “It’s a technical matter that the First Class monthly pass is not being sent to applicants’ houses currently.”
