Politicos' names pop up during Kaskar probe

The NCP has, however, denied the allegations and demanded a fair investigation into the case.

Mumbai: A day after fugitive don Dawood Ibrahim’s brother Iqbal Kaskar was arrested in an extortion case, the murky politician-underworld nexus was exposed yet again.

According to the Thane police, which is investigating the case, one of the arrested accused has mentioned the names of three corporators, one of whom is from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). The NCP has, however, denied the allegations and demanded a fair investigation into the case.

Thane police commissioner Param Bir Singh said, “We cannot reveal the particulars of the investigation at this juncture. But it is true that names of more than one politician have emerged during the investigation. They are of the level of corporator and above.”

Mr Singh, however, refused to disclose the names of the corporators or their parties. However, according to the police sources, one of the two corporators who are under the Thane police’s scanner for their ‘links’ with Kaskar, was earlier arrested in connection with the case related to the suicide of a Thane-based builder Suraj Parmar in December 2015.

Four corporators in all were arrested for abetment of suicide after the Thane-based builder shot himself dead in his office: NCP corporators Najib Mulla and Hanumant Jagdale, Congress corporator Vikrant Chavan and an independent corporator named Sudhakar Chavan. All of them are out on bail in the case.

The NCP has rejected the charge of a nexus between its corporator and Dawood Ibrahim’s gang.

The Thane police arrested Kaskar on Thursday on the basis of a complaint filed by a Thane-based builder. Mr Singh said that the builder had already given four flats and ' 30 lakh in cash to Kaskar. However, he was still being threatened in the name of Ibrahim.

“We are trying to ascertain if Ibrahim played any role in the case,” Mr Singh said.Mr Singh said that the builder had already given four flats and ' 30 lakh in cash to Kaskar. However, he was still being threatened in the name of Ibrahim.
