Mumbai: Petrol has reached its highest price of Rs 93 in many parts of Maharashtra, with prices having crossed the Rs 90 mark in as many as 17 cities of the state.

The Opposition is demanding immediate relief by way of cutting down state taxes on fuel.

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s ally Shiv Sena, too, has made a similar demand.

Parbhani in Maharashtra is buying petrol at the highest price all over India. The Wednesday rate for Parbhani was Rs 93. Prices in cities such as Hingoli, Jintur, Ghansavangi, Amba-jogai, Paranda, Phulambri, and Majalgaon are in a similar range.

Mainly, cities in Marathwada and western Vidarbha have the highest rates. There are also many cities where petrol has crossed the Rs 90 mark. Even in Mumbai, it was selling at Rs 89.54 at a few petrol pumps. So, in transaction, it costs the customer Rs 90.

Picking on the issue, the opposition has demanded immediate relief for the people of the state. “The BJP-Sena government is literally looting the people over taxes on fuel. Maharashtra has the highest amount of tax on petrol. That is why petrol and diesel in Maharashtra are costlier than the rest of the country. We demand that the government cut taxes immediately,” said Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant.

Nationalist Congress Party chief spokesperson Nawab Malik also demanded relief for the people. “We don’t know what the government is waiting for to reduce taxes? Does chief minister Devendra Fadnavis need permission from Delhi to give relief to the people?” asked Mr Malik.

Sena MP Sanjay Raut joined the chorus saying, “We are with the people. Fuel prices are hurting people’s pockets badly. This is not the way to get taxes. Those who are in a position to take a decision should give the people relief.”
