Fire dept files case against the owner of Navrang Studio

The owners had also not taken necessary precautionary measures to prevent fire.

Mumbai: A day after a major fire, in which a fireman was injured, the Mumbai Fire Brigade has registered a complaint against the owners of Navrang Studio at the NM Joshi Marg police station for not following fire safety norms. A senior for official said, “The fire was confined to large stock of celluloid films and scrap material on the fourth floor. They were stored illegally, thereby endangering the life and safety of nearby public. Hence, a FIR was lodged against the owner of the premises at NM Joshi Marge Police Station.”

A level-3 fire had occurred at Navrang Cinema Centre in Todi Mills Compound on Senapati Bapat Marg at Lower Parel on Friday at 1 am. Though there was no casualties, Dinesh Patil (26), a fireman, was injured during the fire fighting operations and was rushed to Nair Hospital. His condition is stable now.

“As per the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Safety Measures 2006, the owner of Navrang Studio had not taken permission, which is required for storing combustible material from the fire brigade. The owners had also not taken necessary precautionary measures to prevent fire. This led to rapid spread of fire,” said the fire official.

Ahmed Pathan, senior police inspector of NM Joshi police station confirmed the development and said, “Upon BMC’s complaint, we have registered a case against the owners of the studio under relevant sections of the IPC, and will probe the matter.”
