Mumbai: On the back of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis' assurance to scrap the project at Nanar, Shiv Sena ministers again raised the issue in the cabinet meeting held Wednesday at Mantralaya. Following this, a meeting of the cabinet sub-committee was immediately held, in which the CM assured Sena ministers about cancellation of the Nanar project.

“The industries department had already issued the notification to cancel the land acquisition for the refinery project at Nanar. However, it was awaiting the CM’s nod. The CM has assured that the notification will be cancelled before the code of conduct for the Lok Sabha polls comes into effect,” said Mr Desai.

Opposition from local farmers prompted the state government to move the location of what will be the country's biggest oil refinery. State-run oil companies and Saudi Arabian oil company, Saudi Aramco have teamed up to build the $44 billion (`3 lakh crore) refinery, which is aimed at giving India steady fuel supplies while meeting Saudi Arabia’s need to secure regular buyers for its oil.

Nanar village in Ratnagiri district was to be the site for the world’s biggest integrated oil refinery and petrochemicals complex with a capacity to process 60 million tonnes. Nearly 14 villages and 850 families were likely to be affected by the project. Thousands of farmers refused to surrender land, fearing it could damage a region famed for its Alphonso mangoes, vast cashew plantations and fishing hamlets that boast bountiful catches of seafood. After their protests, land acquisition was stopped for the refinery at Nanar.
