Mumbai: Union transport and surface minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) senior leader Nitin Gadkari on Saturday said that since the BJP led NDA government came to power, many developmental works have been done which were not done by the Congress party during their 50 year reign over the country.

Talking about Garibi Hatao (removal of poverty) slogan once given by Congress president Rahul Gandhi once again, he said since the beginning Congress was talking about it. Today, the poverty of the people has not disappeared, but the people of Congress’ poverty have disappeared, he said.

Mr Gadkari was addressing a rally at Paithan, Aurangabad in support of State BJP president Raosaheb Danve. He slammed Congress party in his speech saying those who don’t seek votes on development have started seeking votes on cast and religion. He said, “Since many years Congress is giving slogan of ‘Garibi hatao’ remove poverty. Great grandfather of Rahul Gandhi had also given slogan of Garibi hatao but till today poverty exists in the country.”

Counting his party's development work, Mr Gadkari said, various irrigation related works had been completed. After one and half year, Maharashtra's irrigation strength would increase and 50 lakh acre land would come under irrigation.

Mr Gadkari further said that Rs 70,000 crore were being spent to construct National highway. Work of Rs 5 lakh crore was going on within Maharashtra alone.

He also said that BJP government has taken Hercules task of connecting rivers to each other. It has estimated cost of Rs 7,000 crore. Due to this, Marathwada region would prosper in terms of development and infrastructure.
