Ten arrested for carrying beef
Mumbai: Acting on a tip off, Raigad’s Mangaon police nabbed 10 men who were allegedly found to be having 4,000 kilograms of beef, kept in a car registered with the Mumbai transport authorities. The police intercepted the car at the old Mangaon Highway.
According to the police officials, the accused men were on their way to Mumbai with the alleged beef. Besides cows, the slaughter of bulls and bullocks is banned in the state under the Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act.
After intercepting the car following the tip off, the police immediately nabbed the 10 men. They were nabbed under the Maharashtra Preservation Act and the meat was sent to the laboratory for testing its type. A police officer said, “We have sent the samples to the forensic science laboratory and are awaiting the report. We are yet to get the details about the source of the meat.” Previously the police had seized around 700kg suspected beef from a tempo at Shivaji Nagar, Govandi. The samples had been sent for examination to the Kalina based forensic science laboratory to ascertain if the meat falls under any of the banned varieties. The seized stock was handed over to municipal authorities for disposal. On June 29, the police arrested two persons, recovering 300kg suspected beef.
