Mumbai: A 21-year-old from Beed, who was robbed of his speech in the wake of an accident 11 years ago, has regained his voice thanks to laryngotracheal reconstruction surgery, which was performed at state-run JJ Hospital.

The procedure seeks establish a permanent, stable airway for a person to breathe through without the use of a breathing tube. The surgery can also improve voice and swallowing issues, according to a professor of the hospital’s ENT unit.

Assistance professor Dr Sunita Baghe from ENT department said, “The patient underwent multiple unsuccessful operations. Somehow he was referred to us, and we conducted the complete medical evolution. After that, we decided to operate and it was a success.”

The HOD, Dr Shrinivas Chavan, said, “The operation was performed without any ventilator support. It was a great achievement for us.”
