Mumbai: A day after two members of a Nalasopara-based family died of poisoning while two others had to be admitted to a hospital for treatment for the same reason, the police has found that one of the deceased, Manish Singh (30), fed poison to the other three family members by mixing it in khichdi before consuming it himself.

While Manish’s elder daughter, Pragati (7), died, his wife Pinky (25) and their second eight-month-old daughter Bitti, are recovering at Thane civil hospital. Pinky told the police that she and her daughters did not know that Manish had poisoned the family’s dinner.

The police recovered Manish’s alleged suicide note written in Hindi from the family’s residence which read, “Main apni biwi bachchon ko saath lekar ja raha hoon (I am taking my wife and children along with me)”.

Senior police inspector Kishore Kumar said, “The reason behind poisoning the entire family remains a mystery though Manish left a suicide note.”

The police has registered a case against the deceased Manish under sections 302 and 307 of the Indian Penal Code that pertain to murder and attempt to murder. Officers at Tulinj police station said that Pinky, who is still under treatment, is in a sub-conscious state, and was able to only state that the last meal they had was dinner which included khichdi in which Manish might have added the poison. Soon after dinner, the family went to sleep only to have Pinky wake up to vomit blood and fall unconscious. The next thing she remembers is waking up on a hospital bed.

Palghar's Tulinj police, who are probing the case, have said that the earlier Accidental Death Reports (ADR) were converted to an FIR, after Pinky Singh recorded the statement. The police are still investigating the reason and trying to find the vial or bottle of poison that was used to kill the family by mixing it into the food by deception. The neighbours were quizzed too to get an insight to the reason, but the police have not yet found any strong clues to crack open the case.
