Another cop killed trying to stop truck on suspicion

Mumbai: A second policeman was mowed down within three months, while in the line of duty. The constable tried to flag down a truck in Chandrapur district to check if it was ferrying liquor when the driver ran over him, killing him instantly, said the police.

The officials added that the truck was loaded with bullocks and the driver did not stop to avoid being caught.

The deceased was identified as Prakash Meshram, who was killed at the Khambada Wani Naka on the Nagpur-Chandrapur road Sunday night. The police said that following  truck was intercepted in a bid to apprehend its occupants.

While two of them managed to flee, two were arrested by Mr Meshram’s colleagues. Chandrapur is a dry district due to prohibition and hence, the police conducts regular checks.

The arrested accused were identified as Mohammad Raza Jabbar Qureshi and Imtiaz Ahmed Fayyaz; both 19 years’ old, the police said. They have been booked for rash driving and death due to negligence as per the provisions of the Indian Penal Code and have been remanded to police custody for further investigation.

The officials are in the process of tracking down the remaining two accu-sed who are absconding.

In November 2017, police sub-inspector Chhatrapati Chide was mowed down by an SUV while he was on duty at a similar post.
